Chinghai Yushu Earthquake Relief Funds

This morning 14th April 2010, we heard from the news that an earthquake struck Qinghai in China. Lodro Nyima Rinpoche and his Lamas were in Thrangu Centre Petaling Jaya.

What unfolded later was a tragedy of unprecedented proportion as Rinpoche received calls from his monks and Lamas who escaped the tragedy.

Yushu the town where Thrangu Monastery is located and Lodro Nyima Rinpoche is the Chief Abbot was badly damaged from the earthquake. At the time of writing Rinpoche got news that so far 15 bodies of monk had been pulled out of the rubble. Rinpoche also have confirmed news that his Khenpo also died from this disaster. His Lama with us also has lost his elder brother in this earthquake.

Rinpoche mentioned that the Chinese Army are already there helping the Tibetan community and they have ordered the evacuation of Yushu town. The nearby dam was also badly damaged and there is a risk that if it breaks the whole town will be swept away.

Rinpoche has expressed concern that the nomads and the residents of Yushu have gone to higher grounds and without proper clothing and Shelter they may not survive the freezing night temperature.

In the light of this extraordinary tragedy Thrangu Dharma Society Petaling Jaya with the advice and blessing of Lama Lodro Thaye the Resident monks, we are starting a donation drive called the “Qinghai Yushu Earthquake Relief Funds.”

The object of the funds collected will go towards alleviating the sufferings in Yushu in particular, and the Venerable Lodro Nyima Rinpoche will manage the utilization of the funds monies.

As a coordinating Centre, Thrangu Dharma Society Petaling Jaya will prepare a special page on our Thrangu Web site where all donations from the Public will be displayed. Receipts will be issued for all donations.

Namo Buddha Retreat

The Namo Buddha Retreat is a short noviciate program of around 5 days to give an opportunity for laymen to practise Buddha Dharma. Short noviciate program is unheard of in Vajrayana Buddhism although it is common in the Thai Tradition of Theravada Buddhism. In 1998 a group of 5 lay Buddhist made a request to the Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche for permission to take the basic precepts of a Buddhists. Rinpoche gave this group of 5 lay Buddhist the precepts to keep. As a reminder to them to keep their vows, Rinpoche allowed them to be tonsured and take the Vajrayana robes. The first retreat took place in Namo Buddha a hill lock below the towering Himalayan Range and that was how the noviciate program got its name.

The Retreat had continued unbroken for the past 11 years and lay practitioners throughout Asia, America and Europe have joined the Retreat.  Many had the opportunity to sit quietly and keep their precepts and practise their prayers and recitation of the sublime words of the Lord Buddha with no interruptions from their daily lives. It is a short retreat indeed and what benefit can one derive from it? “Keeping the vows before the Buddha and Bodhisattavas even for 1 day from sunrise to sunrise without breaking the precepts will close the three (3) lower realms in this life time.”

The story of the Arahat Katayana and the Female Preta (Hungry Ghost) is often told to emphasise the importance of keeping even one (1) vow. In the previous live time as a human, the Preta was a butcher who slaughter animals for a living. She met a spiritual master who explained to her the cause and effect of killing. Very upset and not willing to give up her livelihood, the woman made a vow that at night she will not butcher any animals. She kept her vows faithfully.

She died and became a preta. In the night the Preta does not appear to be a preta at all, she was a beautiful lady living in a  fabulous palace, when dawn was about to break she told Katayana to go away. Her palace became a burning house and she was tormented suffered at the negative karma created by her. When dusk came, the burning house became the fabulous palace again and the preta became a beautiful woman again.

To take even one vow and keeping it for the rest of our lives is so beneficial. (Ref: The Gem Ornament of Manifold Oral Instructions – H.E. Kalu Rinpoche).

For the first time the 12th Namo Buddha Retreat 2009 will be held in Malaysia at the Seremban Karma Kagyu Monastery. This was at the instructions of Rinpoche and the objective is to give an opportunity to all Buddhists to keep their vows during the duration of the retreat.

To do a little good is better than doing no good – The Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche

During the Retreat participants are expected to observe and will be administered daily by the Retreat Master the Sojong Vows (8 Precepts) as follows:-

  1. I shall not kill;
  2. I shall avoid all sexual activities;
  3. I shall not lie;
  4. I shall completely abandon intoxicants (includes cigarettes and other toxic substances, except for medicinal purposes);
  5. I shall not sit on high and luxurious seats;
  6. I shall not take food at wrong times (no solid food after lunch time till sunrise);
  7. I shall not use perfume or wear ornament/jewellery (watches are allowed but avoid glaring or ornamental types);
  8. I shall not sing or dance (include telling jokes).
